OUGD603 - EP - SHO - Don't Look Back

Promotional Photoshoot for
New Clothing Capsule

The client told me about an upcoming photoshoot and said that I could design something to feature in it. I thought this would be a great opportunity to experiment some more and below is the design I produced for them.

The end result was a large vinyl sticker that would be applied to a sports car as part of the photoshoot. The images of it in use are also featured below. This was, again, an amazing opportunity to see my work used in real world situations.

OUGD603 - EP - Adidas - Final Resolution

Photographing
Event Collateral

As this was one of my most successful projects to date, I was very excited to photograph everything as I was looking forward to seeing how the photos came out. I was please with the end result and the photos were uploaded to my website as well as being submitted for the competition.

My photography studio skills have improved with allowed me to get the white balance right. This made a huge difference to the quality of the photographs. They didn't require much editing.

OUGD603 - EP - Film Posters

Curtains
A student-led production

I came across the opportunity to produce a series of film posters for a student-led production at Leeds Beckett film school. As I had undertaken a number of briefs this year that involved producing posters whilst also exploring poster design as part of my CoP essay, I thought I would put myself forward for the job and use the skills I have picked up this year already.

After being chosen as the designer for the posters, I was sent an email that included all I needed to know about the film including the script and the original text the concept is based upon.

My research involved reading through as much of this as possible as well as talking to the students involved. I wanted to get a good understanding of the film including things like tone of voice and colour schemes.

Once I had a strong idea of what the producer and team wanted from the poster designs, I began to produce.

Secondary research involved looking at existing film posters that were similar to what the film team had in mind for their own posters.

I researched things like typefaces, typesetting and point size so that when I began to design, my own posters would resemble professionally produced ones.

One member of the film team sent me some images that he wanted to use as the main images of the posters. These were still shots from the film that I had to then edit and enhance.

Production

I ended up producing three different poster designs. I was asked to produce one poster that would be seen landscape for certain publicity purposes. Through research, I found the standard typeface used for the credits found at the bottom of the poster. The producer wanted the posters to be simple yet effective with high instant impact. I have tried to achieve this through using bold white text on top of a dark image. The spotlights have then been enhanced and light up the stage that also create a glow around the actresses head.

The other purpose of this format was that it would be used on social media sites such as Facebook to raise awareness of the premier.

I then worked with one member of the crew to produce the next poster shown above. This would be used as the standard film poster outside the cinema. We aimed to keep the style very consistent with the first poster design using strong lighting, dark areas and white text. With this one, I added a glow to the title text to match the glow of the light bulbs.

We then decided to produce a third so that we had a few poster designs to show the producer, hoping that he will like at least one of them.

The posters are being sent to the director today and so I have not had feedback on them yet. However, from my point of view it was a really valuable experience. I have learnt this year that poster design is something I am quite interested in, however I hadn't yet produced posters for an actual client yet. Working with a team of film makers and bringing their film to life through posters was a really rewarding experience. Film posters are seen all over the place and until now I hadn't appreciated them for what they are but after producing my own, I came to realise that they are a huge part of getting publicity for a film and a strong poster design can make a huge difference.

OUGD603 - EP - Adidas - Website

Designing a web page for
Creative Edge

As part of the campaign, it makes sense to have an online presence in order to both spread word about the events as well as giving visitors access to information from their phones and laptops.

Before designing, I thought that I would look at existing websites that serve the same purpose.

One thing I have kept consistent throughout the project is to make sure that the branding and identity appeals to creative-minded people. This is something that is used often if this is the intended audience. By having strong consideration for design, the campaign will appeal to the audience more as well as giving it more credibility. If the branding was done badly, the viewers would assume that the content of the campaign and events wont be of use to them and will be below their own standard of work.

Below are some examples of web pages that I will be taking inspiration from. They all serve a similar purpose and so give me an idea of what to include and what information is most useful to the intended users.

OUGD603 - EP - SHO - Friends & Family

Sending Out the
Promo Tracksuits

The time had come for the client to send out the free package containing their new tracksuit designs. They used my stick on each pack to indicate to the recipient what was inside. This meant that my designs were to be seen my multiple people, some high profile.

OUGD603 - EP - Exhibition - Progress/Discussion

Meet Up & Discussion
Deciding on a Name & Identity

Today we decided to meet up to discuss the branding and identity of our exhibition. This is an important feature of the project for both learning outcomes as well as determining the success of the show.

We began by listing words associated with our concept, e.g. structure, architecture, construction, graphics, interpretation etc.

I then googled synonyms of each of these words to see if we could discover words that have the intended meaning but that aren't that obvious or thought of at first.

After an extensive effort at coming up with words, names and combinations, we all decided on the name:

FORMER
FORM-ER
FORM[ER]

The decision to go with this name is informed by the concept of the show focusing on buildings (form) that were once integral to the city of Leeds (former).

We then decided to word out the concept of the show in a short, snappy sentence...

Graphic interpretations of past architectural forms in Leeds

The next step is to research exhibition branding to get some inspiration and decide on our own deliverables.

The first thing we need to produce is our online presence so that we can begin to spread word of the exhibition.

OUGD603 - EP - SHO - Logo Design

Bolt Logo for
New Clothing Capsule

My client emailed me my first involvement with the creative collective down in London. They have just designed a new pair of tracksuits  and sent them to be produced as part of their new clothing capsule. The tracksuit features a thick bolt running down the side of the sweatshirt and matching tracksuit bottoms. The clothes look like this:

For promotional purposes, the client has asked for a variation of their existing logo to go along side the tracksuit. This would have to include their well known 'SHO' lettering along with a bolt.

Their original logo:

Below is my process to get to the final design for the SHO x Bolt clothing range:

The client also wanted some variation of colour and direction for a number of purposes. The colours were to be printed as stickers, whereas the different direction logo was to be used in an upcoming photoshoot featuring a sports car.

The client intended to send a limited number of tracksuits to friends and family as a means of promotion in order to get them out into the world and be seen. For this, they wanted a sticker that would act as a label on the gift packages. The sticker looked as follows:
