Information Design - Public Information

Public Information comes in a variety of different shapes, sizes and mediums. From informative video sketches to leaflets and fliers through the letterbox. This information can range from a number of topics; health and safety, promotions, sales and many more.

The importance of health and safety public information leaflets and videos has always been a strong one. Nowadays, information leaflets are becoming more and more creative in how they convey a message. The standard two sided flier is now so out of date and simply would not be recognised amongst the more clever designs.

Examples of how leaflets and fliers are now more considerately designed, using nice papers and finishes such as foiling and embossing. The fliers that stand out the most are the more vibrant and interesting ones.

As well as papers and finishes, leaflets have also been designed in different formats and layouts, some even incorporating folds.

Leaflets that fold out in interesting ways are a lot more engaging and invite the reader to open it up and read its contents as apposed to just a flat piece of paper or card that wont be hiding anything within.

Above is one of my favourite examples of a fold-out information leaflet. This is the bill given at the end of the meal at a high end restaurant. By folding inwards, it hides the price as well as looking extremely elegant and inviting, even if the content isn't exactly ideal.

Study Task

Produce a quick leaflet on what to do in case of a Flood.

When given a some information on what to do in a flood, I first had to decide what information was the most important and so would be on the front of the leaflet. The rest of the info would then be included on the back. The most important information being contact info such as the Floodline number, twitter feeds and weather radio frequencies. On the back, I included all the info I gathered on what to do Before, During and After a flood.

I have also started to explore the different formats a leaflet can take. As seen above, there is a huge variety of different ways in which a leaflet can be folded. From a classic gatefold to a 10 page accordion.

Each format is more suited to different topics of information. The format of my leaflet and the way it folds out will be an informed decision for Studio Brief 02.
