Design for Screen

The Brief:

Create an immersive and engaging screen based user experience for a media of your choice, this could include; website, app, streaming service, title sequence, ident's, onscreen graphic overlays, etc.

The role of the communications: Deliver a world class digital experience that engages the audience, how can you maximise the potential of digital devices?

Considerations: Must be global — Digital formats are viewed on a global scale, this must inform your approach and design decisions.
Use mixed media — A combination of image, audio and video should be used to communicate your message
To kickstart the project I will first be coming up with problems people including myself experience on a regular basis, whether this be daily, weekly or even annually. This will give each one of my ideas a purpose and concept that I can then develop.
Every popular app, service, website etc is developed originally from a common problem that needs solving. Once the problem is shown to be solved using this particular app/service etc then people will be more inclined to believe in it and use it in order to make their lives easier.
There are a number of different types of app. There are the purely functional ones such as banking apps and bills that are informative and serve a simple purpose. Then there are apps and websites that aren't as crucial to everyday life and are used more for pleasure and procrastination.

Problems / Solutions...

- Poster when working on laptops
- Using your phone too often - an app that shows you your usage in an engaging way
- Choosing alcohol to match your meal
- Find an Item / service - choose a location e.g. Leeds City Centre, search object = every shop that sells that object / service
- Upgrade to Shazam - when on wifi or otherwise specified, your phone will listen to music around you without you being on the app, learn from your spotify/youtube/applemusic etc and create an engaging music app.
- Student Bills App - All your bills can be paid through this app as well as controlling your leccy, gas from your phone, tips on how to save, usage and other info about your house's use.
- Road safety app - an app in your car that limits your phone use, blocks certain apps like FB, insta etc
- Online shopping for Clothes - It's time consuming

Only
Studio Visit

We had a talk by a small design studio, the talk focused mainly on digital design to relate back to our design for screen brief. I was hoping to get a few good ideas on how to start this brief as well as how far I can take things.

- Brand & Digital design
- Strategy and design consultancy
- Large client base

Digital Design :

- Don't need to be able to code
- Digital design equally important to print
- Primary way of of consuming a brand
- Interactive
- Its here to stay
- Endless opportunities, first paced, constantly evolving

Design Process for Digital :

Phase 1
- Research
- Who are the users
- Come up with personas of intended audience

Phase 2
- Wireframing
- Sketches
- Processes

Phase 3
- Design

Phase 4
- Front end
- Development

Examples of their work

A project they did for the University of Suffolk was part of a complete rebrand. This included designing their website and overall digital presence.

Only make sure to upload their brand guidelines online for anyone to see and refer to. These guidelines include colours and shapes that run through the branding and digital identity.

Helbers is an international clothes brand, and Only had the opportunity to design the website and smartphone app. Taking values and aesthetics from the brand itself, they came up with this incredibly simple, uncluttered design for both that communicates sophistication and luxury.

A main feature they use throughout is the two stitches found in the header, this emulates the stitching in all their clothes.

"We worked with Paul to distil his brand into a harmonious identity"

This is a redesign of the student and staff website for Goldsmiths University, London. They tried to achieve an engaging format that was best suited to which ever device it was accessed on, whether that be on a smart phone or online.

"The redesign reduced bounce rates by more than 40% across key student recruitment pages and supported an increase in page views of more than 300% across news and comment articles, helping the University to showcase excellence in academia."
